Continue Browsing TripsDeparture from Marrakech early morning, heading south through the Atlas foothills toward Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 meters). The road climbs through cedar and argan forest, then opens into high desert plateau. By mid-afternoon, you descend into the Draa Valley, one of Morocco's longest river systems and historically a major caravan route. Zagora appears as an oasis town where date palms cluster along the valley floor. Check into your hotel, settle into the rhythm of a place where life moves with the seasons and the river's memory. Dinner is in the hotel or a family restaurant overlooking the valley.
Morning departure following the Draa Valley south and east. The landscape transitions gradually from date palms to scrubland to open desert. You pass through villages where life depends on what water remains, where the river once flowed year-round. By afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon—a shift from valley to pure sand geography. Arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon. At sunset (approximately 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM depending on season), you mount a camel for a trek into the dunes. The ride is gentle, about one hour, timed to catch the light as it drops. Return to camp for dinner cooked over coals, followed by live Gnawa music, storytelling, and the deep silence of the desert night.
Optional sunrise walk in the dunes before breakfast (guides available for early risers). After breakfast and camp checkout, begin the return journey to Marrakech. The drive retraces the Draa Valley and returns via Tizi n'Tichka, arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening. This final stretch gives you time to process the experience—the silence of the camp still in your ears, the taste of campfire tea still on your tongue.
