Fes is not a city you rush through. It unfolds in layers — each alleyway in the medina revealing something the last one concealed, each rooftop view offering a perspective you did not expect. This three-day journey from Marrakech to Riad Salam Fes puts you directly into that experience, staying within the ancient walls rather than on the edges, which changes everything.

You will spend two nights at Riad Salam, a traditional riad positioned deep in the Medina Fez. From here, you move through the city with a local guide who knows not just the main sights but the rhythms of the place — the hours when the leather workers are most active at Chouara, the quieter stretches of souks where actual residents shop rather than tourists, the tea stalls where locals gather. The Medina Fez is the world's oldest continuously inhabited urban area, and its University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859, predates Oxford by centuries. These are not abstract facts when you are standing in the courtyards where students have studied for over a thousand years.

The tannery visit is not a quick photo stop. You will spend time there with someone who understands the process, the history, the reason these particular vats have been operating in the same locations for generations. You will smell the leather being worked, see the natural dyes at work, understand why the Moroccan leather from Fes carries the reputation it does. Riad Salam Fes becomes your base — a place to return to each evening, rest in a quiet courtyard, and process what you have seen. This is not fast tourism. It is immersion at a human pace.

Marrakech to Fes – Riad Arrival

Depart Marrakech early morning in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive to Fes takes approximately 7 hours, passing through cedar forests and glimpses of the Atlas Mountains. You will stop for lunch en route (not included). Arrive at Riad Salam Fes in the late afternoon. After settling into your room and resting, take an evening stroll through the immediate medina streets to orient yourself. Dinner is served at the riad, where you will meet your guide and receive a briefing on the next two days. Evening free to adjust to the city's rhythm.

Medina Exploration & Chouara Tannery

Breakfast at the riad. Morning guided tour through the Medina Fez, beginning with the labyrinthine souks — leather goods, metalwork, textiles, spices. Walk to the courtyard of the University of Al Quaraouiyine, one of the world's oldest universities (founded 859), and observe its stunning Islamic architecture. Mid-afternoon visit to the Chouara Tannery, where leather is dyed and treated using traditional methods unchanged for centuries. Your guide will position you at an elevated vantage point and explain each step of the process. Return to the riad for rest. Dinner at Riad Salam Fes, reflecting on the day's discoveries.

Artisans & Return to Marrakech

Final breakfast at the riad. Morning visit to active artisan workshops — woodcarvers, metalworkers, textile producers — with your guide introducing you directly to craftspeople. This part of the medina is far less touristed and reveals how daily life and craft tradition coexist. Around midday, depart Fes for Marrakech. The return journey retraces the morning route; use the drive to reflect on what you have seen and experienced. Arrive in Marrakech late afternoon. End of tour.
