The Ouzoud Waterfalls sit 110 metres above the Abid River, tucked into the Middle Atlas foothills about 100 kilometres north of Marrakech. This is not a rushed tourist sprint — it is a full day that lets you actually breathe in the landscape, move at your own pace, and understand why locals have walked this valley for centuries.

You will arrive mid-morning and immediately feel the shift. The air cools as you descend into the gorge. Olive groves slope downward in neat terraces, and the sound of water grows steadier. Here is where the Barbary macaques appear — wild monkeys that live nowhere else on earth except the High Atlas. They move through the trees without fanfare, utterly unbothered by visitors, and if you are patient with a camera or just quiet enough, you will see them eating, grooming, playing. This alone justifies the trip. But there is more.

The boat ride to the base of the Ouzoud Waterfalls is optional, not mandatory. If you choose it, you will float beneath the cascades themselves, feel the spray, and understand the sheer volume of water dropping from above. The river is calm at the base, the boatmen are skilled, and the perspective from water level transforms the falls from impressive to genuinely arresting. If you prefer solid ground, the walking trails around the upper plateau offer equally spectacular views and no crowds.

Lunch happens in a traditional Berber home with windows framing the falls. The food is simple and generous — tagine, fresh bread, salad, fruit — cooked that morning by women from the village. This is where the day slows completely. You sit. You eat. You watch the water in the distance. No rushing. By 6 p.m., you are back in Marrakech, refreshed in a way a city day never quite achieves.
