This 12-hour day trip takes you from Marrakech across the dramatic Tichka Pass through the High Atlas to two of Morocco's most culturally significant locations. You'll start early, ascending through cedar forests and Berber villages before descending into the Draa Valley, where the ancient ksar of Aït Ben Haddou emerges against the red earth like something from another century.

Aït Ben Haddou is no museum piece. It is a living community where families still inhabit the earthen structures, where light moves across adobe walls in ways that have attracted filmmakers for decades. You will walk through narrow lanes, climb to the upper kasbah, and understand why this site earned UNESCO World Heritage designation. Your guide will explain the architectural history and the families who built and maintained these structures across generations.

After exploring the ksar and enjoying lunch in the valley, you will continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway city where Moroccan and international film productions have been shot for over 40 years. At the studios, you will see sets, costumes, and props from films and television series. The experience demystifies cinema while grounding it in the very real craft of set design and production.

The drive back to Marrakech follows the same mountain route, giving you time to absorb what you have seen. This is not a rushed checklist tour—it is a full day designed for photographers, history enthusiasts, families, and anyone curious about how Morocco's landscape and heritage have shaped its cultural significance. The difficulty is easy; the rewards are substantial.

Marrakech to Aït Ben Haddou via Tichka Pass

You will be collected from your hotel in Marrakech between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. Your driver-guide will take the N1 road toward the High Atlas, passing through Berber villages and olive groves. Around 8:30 AM, you begin ascending the Tichka Pass, the highest road in North Africa at 2,260 meters. The landscape shifts from cultivated foothills to rocky peaks. By mid-morning, you arrive at Aït Ben Haddou. This adobe fortress, built centuries ago as a trading post and caravanserai, sits on a hillside above the Draa Valley. You will have approximately three hours here, walking through the narrow lanes, visiting family homes and shops, and climbing to the upper kasbah for panoramic views.

Lunch in Draa Valley and Drive to Ouarzazate

After exploring Aït Ben Haddou, you will descend into the Draa Valley for lunch at a traditional restaurant, where you can taste tagines and other Moroccan cuisine. The valley is fertile and green, a stark contrast to the desert you will see later. Around 1:00 PM, you will drive south toward Ouarzazate, approximately 32 kilometers away, passing through date palm groves and small settlements. You will arrive in Ouarzazate by early afternoon and proceed directly to the film studios.

Ouarzazate Film Studios and Return to Marrakech

At the studios, a guide will show you the sets, costumes, and props used in international and Moroccan productions. You will learn about the technical and creative processes behind filming in Morocco, and why this region has become a hub for cinema. The tour typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. By 4:00 PM, you will begin the return drive to Marrakech via the Tichka Pass, retracing your morning route through the High Atlas. You will pass through the cedar forests again as the afternoon light softens. Arrival in Marrakech is expected around 7:00 to 7:30 PM, depending on traffic and stops.
