Continue Browsing TripsHotel pickup between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. Your guide collects you from your accommodation and you head south through the Ourika Valley, the landscape shifting from Marrakech's flat terrain to rising foothills. The drive takes roughly 90 minutes, gaining elevation gradually. You pass through small villages, past river valleys where water runs year-round, and through stands of cedar and oak forest. By the time you reach Imlil village, you're breathing different air. Your mule handler greets you, assigns you a steady animal, and you adjust to the saddle while your guide explains the day's route.
The mule trek begins in the village square and immediately enters a world of stone terraces, narrow paths, and the sound of water. You climb gently through walnut and apple orchards, past traditional stone houses where families are going about their day. The trail winds through cedar forest and opens onto views of the valley below and the peaks above. This is working landscape—not a nature reserve, but the place where Berber families have farmed and lived for generations. Your guide points out landmarks and tells you about the people and places you're passing. By mid-morning, you reach your lunch stop.
A Berber family welcomes you into their home. The mother has prepared tagine, fresh bread baked on a traditional griddle, and mint tea. You eat seated on cushions, looking out over the terraces toward the valley. Conversation happens naturally—ask about the crops, the seasons, how water reaches the fields—or simply sit in the easy quiet of people used to taking time with meals. After lunch and tea, you rest briefly before beginning the descent on a different route, bringing you back to Imlil village by late afternoon. Your legs feel it, but your mind feels lighter.
The drive back to Marrakech follows the same valley but feels different after a day in the mountains. You descend gradually, leaving the cedar forest and re-entering the warm landscape you started from. Arrival in Marrakech is typically between 5:00 and 5:30 PM, giving you time to rest, shower, and reflect before dinner. Your guide drops you at your hotel with the kind of tiredness that feels earned.
